Island Farms: Farm Tour

See how we raise Hawaiʻi’s best local pork — with care, quality, and aloha. From genetics and nutrition to animal welfare and sustainability, this is the Island Farms way.

Family Legacy, Local Roots

Founded in 2010 by the Souza family, Island Farms began when David Souza Sr. transformed an old dairy farm in Waiʻanae into Island Topsoil. What started as a small backyard project grew into Oʻahu’s only vertically integrated pork farm, producing high-quality pork at wholesale prices. Today, David Jr. and his daughter Kaylen carry on the family legacy, raising pigs the right way and staying true to their Waiʻanae roots.

Superior Pork Starts with Premium Genetics

At Island Farms, better pork begins with better genetics. We use PIC genetics — backed by the motto “Never stop improving your success.”
We maintain genetic excellence through artificial insemination, sourcing top-tier semen monthly from a PIC stud in Kentucky. This ensures consistent health, performance, and quality across our herd.

Nutrition That Supports Health & Performance

At Island Farms, we believe that pig health starts with quality nutrition. That’s why we pay close attention to every detail of what our pigs eat—because the right feed makes all the difference in their health, growth, and performance.

We use natural farming techniques and provide a premium vegetarian diet, tailored to meet the unique needs of pigs at every stage of life. Our feed formulas are carefully developed to optimize daily intake and promote healthy, consistent gains.

Our pigs thrive on a carefully formulated vegetarian diet, designed to match every stage of growth and reproduction. This program builds strong starts, steady gains, and healthy finishes.

Dependable Feeding Systems

Consistency is key. We trust proven feeding systems that ensure our pigs get the right nutrition every time.

At Island Farms, we depend on Automated Production Systems (AP) to keep feed flowing consistently to our animals. Known for their reliability and low-maintenance design, AP systems are trusted by producers around the world.

With over 30 years of industry experience, AP delivers durable, high-performance equipment that supports our commitment to animal health and operational excellence. As global demand for pork rises, scalable solutions like these are more important than ever.

Ultrasound for Early Pregnancy Detection

We use ultrasound technology at 28 days post-insemination to confirm sow pregnancies. This tool helps us:

Grower Barns: A Natural, Healthy Living Environment

Our pigs are raised in deep-litter pens built on Korean Natural Farming (KNF) principles — designed to be sustainable, comfortable, and odor-controlled.
• Base layer of biochar for odor control • Logs for airflow and enrichment • Layered organic bedding (wood chips, sawdust, clippings) • Inoculated with Indigenous Microorganisms (IMOs) • Long-term maintenance and eventual compost harvest
• Naturally controls odor • Reduces labor and water usage • Produces nutrient-rich compost • Promotes natural rooting behavior and better welfare

Turning Data into Action

We partner with MetaFarms, a platform that gives us complete digital visibility of our operations. From sow records to performance dashboards, MetaFarms lets us:
Technology ensures our farm runs smoothly, transparently, and with precision.

Closing the Loop

At Island Farms, sustainability is a full-circle system. Compost harvested from our pens returns to the soil, feeding the land that feeds our pigs. Local produce and natural inputs complete the cycle — reducing waste, conserving resources, and giving back to our community.
